The US Imposes Duties on Some European Goods on a Dispute With EU

The US government has said it will raise tariffs on certain EU products, including aircraft components and wine from France and Germany, at the latest turning point in a 16-year-old dispute over aircraft support between Washington and Brussels.

In a statement, the US Trade Representative’s office said it was adding duties on aircraft components and certain types of alcoholic drinks from France and Germany.

The US Trade Representative’s office did not say when the fees would go into effect, but indicated additional “imminent” details.

The US move comes as negotiators from the United States and Europe are continuing talks on ending a long-running dispute over government aid to European Airbus, which has received political support from Britain, France, Germany and Spain, and US support for Boeing aircraft maker.

On Wednesday, the office of the US Trade Representative said that the European Union had unfairly calculated fees on the United States allowed by a ruling by the World Trade Organization in the ongoing dispute, adding that “the European Union needs to take some measures to compensate for the unfairness.”
