Gold Rebounds as Central Bank Buying Strengthens Long-Term Support

Gold prices recovered on Tuesday after an early decline, with the precious metal regaining momentum as investors balanced rising geopolitical tensions against continued demand from central banks. Although renewed uncertainty in the Middle East briefly pressured market sentiment, gold proved resilient, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s preferred safe-haven assets.

Early Volatility Gives Way to Recovery

Gold initially slipped toward the $4,120-per-ounce level after escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz fueled a rise in oil and natural gas prices, increasing concerns about global inflation. However, the decline proved short-lived as buyers returned to the market, helping the metal rebound above $4,150 later in the session.

The recovery highlighted that investors remain willing to accumulate gold during periods of weakness, especially while geopolitical risks continue to cloud the global economic outlook.

Central Bank Buying Remains a Powerful Tailwind

One of the strongest sources of support for gold continues to come from official sector demand. China’s central bank extended its gold-buying streak to 20 consecutive months in June, adding nearly 15 metric tons to its reserves.

The latest purchase marked the largest monthly increase since late 2023, underscoring an accelerating pace of accumulation. Over the past three months alone, China’s purchases totaled approximately 33 metric tons, suggesting that lower prices have encouraged additional buying.

Since the current buying cycle began, China’s gold reserves have increased by more than 80 metric tons, reflecting a long-term strategy to diversify reserve assets and strengthen holdings of precious metals.

Inflation Concerns Remain in Focus

Higher energy prices have revived concerns that inflation could remain stubborn, particularly if tensions continue to disrupt global shipping routes. Even so, expectations for monetary policy have changed little, allowing gold to stabilize after its initial decline.

With interest-rate expectations remaining broadly steady, investors appear more focused on geopolitical uncertainty and sustained central bank demand than on short-term market fluctuations.

Outlook

Gold’s rebound suggests that downside risks may remain limited as strong institutional buying continues to absorb periods of market weakness. While geopolitical developments are likely to keep prices volatile in the near term, persistent central bank accumulation and ongoing demand for safe-haven assets continue to provide a solid foundation for the precious metal.

As long as these supportive factors remain in place, gold is likely to retain its appeal among investors seeking protection against economic uncertainty and market volatility.
