The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said Monday that the number of new Coronavirus infections worldwide increased last week for the first time in seven weeks.
Tedros added that the increase is “disappointing, but not surprising.” He urged countries not to ease measures to combat the spread of the disease. He indicated that countries are rushing to ease these measures in a bet that vaccines will end the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also mentioned that Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire became, on Monday, the first two countries to start vaccination with vaccines provided by Kovacs, which is the international program to provide vaccines to poor and middle-income countries. But he also criticized rich countries for stocking up on vaccines.
