The US Treasury has imposed new sanctions on Hong Kong’s chief executive, Carrie Lam, along with 10 other officials. US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said the sanctions target those undermining Hong Kong’s self-rule, including Governor Carrie Lam.
Mnuchin stressed during his remarks that the United States stands with the people of Hong Kong, and this step comes weeks after China imposed the National Security Law in Hong Kong, which angered many citizens, leading to many protests against this law.
The United States and a number of countries, including Britain, Canada and Australia, had declared their rejection of this decision and considered it a violation of rights within Hong Kong. These statements led to an escalation of tensions between the United States and China, especially in light of the disputes over the United States imposing restrictions on Chinese technology companies.
