Suella Braverman quits UK home secretary post

Suella Braverman has left her position as UK Home Secretary, adding to the turmoil surrounding Prime Minister Liz Truss’s six-week government. In less than a week, after finance minister, Kwasi Kwarting, had been fired on Friday.

The Home Secretary was reported to be leaving “by order” from the new Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt, and some newspapers said she would be replaced by former Transportation Minister Grant Shapps. The Interior Ministry declined to comment on the reports.

Truss was forced to cancel a planned visit amid desperate attempts to salvage her premiership. Braverman was eliminated in the second round of the Conservative Party leadership elections after Boris Johnson resigned, then turned to support Liz Truss and was appointed Home Secretary on September 6.

The GBP/USD is trading at 1.1236 at the time of writing, and investors are closely watching the reflection of UK political turmoil on the performance of the British pound, which fell on Wednesday after a larger-than-expected rise in consumer price inflation reading in Britain and fears that the country could slide into a deeper recession. The country has boosted expectations that the Bank of England’s interest rate hike in November may be less hawkish.
