Facebook and Twitter Escalate War Against US Election Misinformation

Online social media platforms have escalated their war against misinformation about the US election. Facebook has created a center to help users with polling resources, and Twitter has expanded the rules against misinformation about the mail and early voting.

The move comes at a time when social media networks on the Internet are facing criticism for what has been described as their lenient approach to false news reports and disinformation campaigns, which many believe affected the results of the 2016 presidential election.

Twitter’s move will include coming up with new policies that “confirm accurate information on all available voting options, including by mail and early voting.”

“We are focusing on empowering everyone eligible to register and vote through new partnerships, tools and policies,” Jessica Herrera Flanigan, Twitter’s vice president for public policy for the Americas, told Reuters in an email.
