ECB looks for new top supervisor to succeed Enria

The European Central Bank said on Wednesday that it is seeking for a new top bank supervisor to replace Andrea Enria, whose tenure expires at the end of the year.

Candidates for the position of chair of the ECB’s Supervisory Board, the eurozone’s most senior banking watchdog, must apply by June 23. The ECB’s Governing Council will select the winner in the autumn for a five-year term.

Conversations with a dozen persons with direct information last month revealed that Germany’s Claudia Buch, the vice president of the Bundesbank, is regarded a clear frontrunner for the post.

Most publications also cited Spain’s Margarita Delgado as a strong prospect, while several also mentioned Ireland’s Sharon Donnery as a possible option.

Before consulting the Supervisory Board, the ECB’s Governing Council will form a pre-selection panel to compile a shortlist of the most qualified individuals.

To begin in the new post on January 1, the winning candidate must be accepted by the European Parliament and ratified by the European Union Council by December.
