Turkey raises natural gas prices sharply for industrial facilities and families

The state-owned Turkish Energy Import Corporation (Botas) said that natural gas prices for industrial facilities rose by 50 percent and increased for households by 35 percent.

(Botas) also said late on Thursday evening that the prices of natural gas used to generate electricity rose by 44.3 percent as of April 1.

Turkey imports almost all of its energy needs, making it vulnerable to the repercussions of large fluctuations in prices. Government data showed that energy costs began rising in September and increased by 212 percent year on year in the first two months of 2022 to $16.8 billion.

BOTAŞ’s purchases of foreign currency from the central bank have reached record levels in the past few months due to high energy prices.
