Britain announces new aviation sanctions against Russia

Britain unveiled Wednesday, March 9, new sanctions against Russia in the aviation sector, giving it the authority to seize any Russian aircraft and banning the export of aerospace-related products to Russia.

Britain will also tighten its ban on Russian planes to criminalize their flying or landing in Britain.

The State Department said in a statement that the ban includes any aircraft owned, operated or leased by any person with ties to Russia or any sanctioned individuals or entities, and will include the authority to detain aircraft owned by those associated with Russia.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said banning Russian planes from Britain and criminalizing their overflights would cause more economic damage to Russia and those close to the Kremlin.

The State Department said it would introduce new legislation on Wednesday to implement these measures.
