Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau activated rarely used emergency powers in the country in an attempt to end protests that have closed some border crossings with the United States and paralyzed parts of the capital.
Under the emergency law, the government introduced measures aimed at cutting off funding to protesters and took steps to strengthen law enforcement.
“The blockades are harming our economy and endangering public safety,” Trudeau told a news conference. “We cannot and will not allow illegal and dangerous activities to continue.”
