Japan Shares Rise as Wall Street Rises

Japanese stocks closed higher on Monday, following in the footsteps of US stocks, and technology shares led the gains as investors looked confident in the economic recovery in a week of central bank meetings.

The Nikkei index rose 0.71 percent to 28,640.49 points, its first gain in three sessions, when the broader Topix index rose 0.13 percent to close at 1978.13 points.

The US Standard & Poor’s index closed at a record high on Friday, despite the rise in consumer prices, which enhances the chances of tightening monetary policy.

Investors seemed confident in the markets’ ability to withstand what this week’s central bank meetings might bring, including a possible early termination of US stimulus.
