Reports by British parliament members said that the government will be exposed to financial risks for decades as a result of spending 372 billion pounds on the Corona pandemic, adding that more than two billion pounds has been spent on unusable protection tools.
The Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee said in two reports on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic that lessons must be learned before a public inquiry scheduled for 2022.
The committee highlighted a loss estimated at 26 billion pounds through fraud and default on loans granted to companies to help them face the pandemic, as an example of the ongoing financial risks.
In a second report, the commission said there were also “unacceptably high” levels of waste due to the purchase of 2.1 billion pieces of inappropriate personal protective equipment, equivalent to more than £2 billion in public money.
The government said that only 0.84% of all PPEs were found to be unfit for use and that it had plans to repurpose those items that could not be used in health services.
