Japan’s Nikkei Rises With SoftBank’s Recovery

The Nikkei index closed slightly higher on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Tuesday, with the recovery of SoftBank and Fast Retailing shares, but fears of a possible increase in Coronavirus infections during the Olympic Games capped gains.

The Nikkei gained 0.16 percent to record 28,643.21 points, giving up an early gain of 0.5 percent, and the broader Topix index rose 0.28 percent to 1954.50 points.

The Nikkei fell more than 0.6 percent in the previous session after a spike in COVID-19 infections at the weekend.

At the sector level, air transport recorded the biggest gain on Topix, adding 2.8 percent, followed by oil and coal producers, up 1.8 percent, and mining companies, which gained 1.6 percent.
