Euro Struggles to Build Momentum as Markets Reassess Fed and ECB Rate Outlook

The euro posted modest gains against the US dollar on Friday but struggled to extend its advance as investors reassessed the outlook for interest rates in both the United States and the eurozone. Trading activity remained subdued due to the US Independence Day holiday, limiting market momentum despite the recent weakness in the dollar.

The common currency benefited initially from disappointing US employment data released a day earlier, which reduced expectations that the Federal Reserve will move quickly to raise interest rates again. However, the dollar stabilized after its sharp decline, preventing the euro from making a stronger breakout.

Interest Rate Expectations Remain the Main Market Driver

Recent economic data have reshaped investor expectations for monetary policy on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the United States, weaker-than-expected job creation has eased concerns that the Federal Reserve will need to tighten policy in the immediate future. At the same time, inflation remains above the central bank’s long-term target, meaning policymakers are unlikely to completely rule out additional rate increases later this year.

Meanwhile, in Europe, softer inflation readings have raised questions about whether the European Central Bank will continue raising borrowing costs at the same pace. Although inflationary pressures have cooled, officials continue to signal that bringing inflation back under control remains a top priority.

Markets Await Fresh Economic Signals

Investors are now shifting their attention to upcoming economic reports and central bank communications for clearer guidance on the next policy moves.

With both the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank balancing slowing inflation against resilient economic activity, financial markets are expected to remain highly sensitive to every major data release in the weeks ahead.

Euro Outlook Depends on Central Bank Decisions

The euro’s near-term direction is likely to depend on whether incoming economic data reinforce expectations of delayed US rate hikes or revive confidence in additional tightening by European policymakers.

Until a clearer policy path emerges, currency markets may continue to experience limited moves, with investors remaining cautious amid mixed economic signals and reduced trading volumes.
