The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) closed higher on Thursday, supported by a positive sentiment and economic data that showed a healthy performance by the manufacturing sector. Accordingly, the S&P 500 index closed at a new all-time high, despite a rise in jobless claims in the U.S.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained about 171.66 points, or 0.52%, to close at 33,153.21.
Meanwhile, the S&P 500 index surged by about 47 points, or 1.18%, to close at near 4,019.87 points. It is the very first time for the index to close above the 4,000-point mark, reaching a new record high.
The Nasdaq Composite Index also finished higher by 233.23 points, or 1.76%, at 13,480.11 points.
