U.S. Job Growth Slowest in 2021

U.S. job growth fell to the slowest pace of 2021 in September, as the Delta variant and a persistent shortage of workers restrained the ability of companies to hire or attract more workforce.

The U. S. economy created 194,000 jobs in September, the smallest gain since December 2020 and down from 366,000 jobs added in August, the Labor Department said Friday.

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 194,000 workers in September as the unemployment rate fell to 4.8%.

Economists surveyed by Refinitiv were expecting the addition of 500,000 new jobs and the unemployment rate to slip to 5.1%. The jobs gains in August were revised up to 366,000 from 235,000.

President Biden is expected to address the report Friday. He was scheduled to speak at 11:30 a.m. ET, but those remarks have been delayed, with no guidance from the White House on when they could begin.
