The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, is set to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss the European Union (EU) recovery fund.
“Spain’s future is at stake in the coming days,” said the Spanish government spokeswoman Maria Jesus Montero, Reuters reported.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently said that EU members must soon agree on a deal regarding the recovery fund, stressing that an agreement must be reached before the end of summer.
An EU leaders summit will discuss on July 17-18 the planned EUR 750 billion ($840 billion) economic stimulus package.
Spain is hoping to receive around EUR 140 billion.
Spain’s Minister of Economy Nadia Calvino said that all debt issued by the EU to help its member states in the fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) will eventually be paid back.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte recently indicated that there is no urgency to reach an agreement during the upcoming summit.
