Second Trump Trial in U.S. Senate to Begin Next Week

The United States House of Representatives will reportedly deliver the single article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump to the Senate on Monday, according to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The Senate is set to witness the second trial of Trump; however, removal from office is not now an option, since the former president has already left his post after the inauguration of President Joe Biden.

Nonetheless, the Senate, where Democrats now hold a simple majority, could vote on banning Trump from running for office every again.

The House is charging Trump with inciting an insurrection against the government, after a large group of the former president supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6 to try to stop the ratification of the presidential election results.

It is worth noting that in order to convict Trump, at least 17 Republican Senators will have to vote against the former President alongside the 50 Democrats who now represent the majority in the Upper Chamber, with the Vice President being the tiebreaker.

It has been reported that Republicans in the Senate want to delay the trial until February, in order to provide enough time for Trump to prepare his defense.

Accordingly, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has asked the House to send the article of impeachment on January 28 for a full and fair process.

Meanwhile, Pelosi is arguing that the former president will have had the same amount of time to prepare for trial” as impeachment managers.

Trump has already hired a defense attorney, choosing lawyer Butch Bowers from South Carolina.
