Nikkei closes at its highest level in more than two weeks

Japan’s Nikkei index ended Monday’s trading at its highest level in more than two weeks, tracking Wall Street’s strong closing last week, as heavyweights and travel-related stocks led the gains.

The Nikkei index closed up 1.16 percent to 28,542.11 points, its highest closing level since August 26.

The broader Topix index rose 0.75 percent to 1980.22 points.

US stocks rose on Friday as the major indexes posted their first weekly gains in four weeks.

In Tokyo, heavy stocks rose, as Fast Retail, operator of the Uniqlo clothing chain, jumped 2.29 percent, and Softbank to invest in technology 2.49 percent. Tokyo Electron, a chip-making equipment maker, rose 1.21 percent.

Travel and retail stocks rose after a report that the Japanese government is considering removing its daily cap on foreign visitors by October.
