US stocks mixed ahead of weekend

After the market closed on Friday, US equities were mixed, with gains coming from the oil and gas, utilities, and telecoms industries while losses came from the technology, basic materials, and consumer goods industries.

The NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.20%, the S&P 500 index lost 0.01%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.07% at the NYSE close.


Walmart Inc. had the greatest trading day of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, rising 1.46% or 2.28 points to close at 157.97. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated increased 0.91% or 4.51 points to 498.47 in late trading, while Boeing Co rose 0.99% or 2.22 points to end at 226.76.

Johnson & Johnson had the poorest performance of the session, dropping 0.84% or 1.46 points to close at 172.55. Amgen Inc. lost 0.77 percent or 2.03 points to finish at 261.82, and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. lost 0.75 percent or 2.47 points to finish at 325.05.

On the S&P 500, Ross Stores Inc., which increased by 5.01% to 118.72, Applied Materials Inc., which increased by 3.68% to close at 142.66, and Generac Holdings Inc., which increased by 2.62% to close at 113.36, were the best performers.

The three worst performers were Deere & Company, which dropped 5.34% to close at 396.78, Keysight Technologies Inc., which was down 13.77% to 129.39 in late trade, and Moderna Inc., which was down 4.35% to 101.62 at the close.

Neptune Wellness Solutions Inc., which increased by 75.56% to 0.24, JetAI Inc., which increased by 64.25% to close at 6.57, and EzFill Holdings Inc., which increased by 44.38% to close at 4.62, were the top performers on the NASDAQ Composite.

The worst performers were Impel Neuropharma Inc., which dropped 39.73% to 0.38 at the close, Evelo Biosciences, which lost 43.86% to 6.99 in late trade, and Selina Hospitality, which lost 41.23% to conclude at 0.43.

On the New York Stock Exchange, advancing shares outnumbered advancing shares 1694 to 1200, and 92 shares closed unchanged. On the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, advancing shares outnumbered advancing shares 1823 to 1658, and 113 shares ended unchanged.

Shares of Keysight Technologies Inc. decreased by 13.77% or 20.66 to 129.39, marking a 52-week low. Selina Hospitality’s stock dropped 41.23%, or from 0.30 to 0.43, to an all-time low. Impel Neuropharma’s stock dropped to record lows, dropping 39.73% or 0.25 to 0.38.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.30% to 17.30.
