Trump and Biden Exchange Attacks at First Debate

The first US presidential debate was held on Tuesday night in Cleveland, Ohio, between the incumbent Republican President Donald Trump, and Former Vice President and the Democratic nominee Joe Biden, with a limited number of attendees in accordance with social distancing rules and preventive measures against COVID-19.

At the beginning of the debate, Trump defended his nominee to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, while Biden argued that the process must be delayed until the American people can have their say in the next elections.

The debate then moved to disagreements regarding the affordable healthcare act, known as Obama Care, which Biden said Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court views as unconstitutional.

The candidates then exchanged attacks, with Trump accusing Biden with allying with the extreme left, while Biden called Trump a liar.

On the topic of COVID-19, Biden accused Trump of doing a poor job, lying to the American people about the extent of the crisis, and failing to reduce the number of deaths, while the Republican president accused the former vice president of doing a horrible job in facing the swine flu.

Trump reiterated his promise that a vaccine could be ready by the beginning of November, which Biden said is a lie.

The President of the United States then denied the claim that he paid $750 in annual federal income tax in 2016 and 2017.

The debate then discussed the issues of race, law and order, protests and riots. After that, each candidate made their case for why should voters vote for each of them and not their opponent, with Trump referring to his administration’s success in the economy prior to the COVID-19 crisis. On the other hand, Biden focused on COVID-19 and the economic hardships facing the American people under the crisis, pointing to his success as Vice President in the Obama administration.

The debate was concluded after exchanges on the topics of climate change and the fairness of the elections.
