The Trump administration has requested that a federal appeals court suspend an order allowing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to remain in her position. This action comes amid allegations of mortgage fraud against Cook, which the administration claims are damaging to the Fed’s credibility.
The administration argues that Cook must be immediately removed from the Board of Governors, without waiting for the results of an official inquiry.
The accusation against Cook is that she falsely listed a rented property as her primary residence, in addition to another address. This type of error is typically handled by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and generally results in a tax adjustment and fines.
The administration’s call for swift action comes from Donald Trump, a sitting president with 34 federal indictments and 34 guilty verdicts for falsifying business records. He was granted special consideration from a Republican-majority Congress to remain in office despite the guilty verdicts from the US court system.
