Passenger car sales in China rose 26.4% in May

Data showed that passenger car sales in China rose to 2.05 million units in May, up 26.4% year on year.

Specifically, sales of SUVs, MPVs and crossovers in May expanded compared to the same period last year, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

During the period, China’s total production of passenger cars reached 2.01 million units, up 18.2 percent year on year.

The association attributed the jump in sales last month to the promotional activities for purchasing cars during the Labor Day holiday and the gradual stabilization of prices in the final market, which stimulated the vitality of consumption.

The association said total sales for the first five months of 2023 grew 10.7 percent year-on-year to about 9 million units.

She added that during the period from January to May, China produced 9.06 million passenger cars, up 10.6 percent year on year.
