The United States Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, said on Tuesday that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is still with us and will likely continue for a while.
Powell noted that people and businesses have improvised and learned how to adapt and live their lives despite COVID in what he described as a new world.
He also noted that COVID-19 is still casting a shadow on economic activity, a remark that comes in line with concerns across markets regarding the pace of the recovery.
“We cannot declare victory yet.”
Speaking to a group of students and educators in a virtual academic town hall, Powell mostly discussed economic education and the importance of economic as a field of study and a profession, as well as how economics students can play a major role in public service, especially considering the current challenging times.
“This is an extraordinary time, and I believe that it will result in an extraordinary generation.”
“You will see the world differently than your predecessors. You have been forced, sooner than most people, to consider what in life is truly important.”
“This is a historical inflection point, and this generation of students is in a position to turn its lessons into profound tools of change.”
