Donald Trump Claims Victory in 2024 Presidential Election Amid GOP Gains

Former President Donald Trump declared victory in the 2024 presidential election after Fox News projected his win over Democrat Kamala Harris, marking a remarkable political comeback. Trump’s projected triumph included key battleground states—Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia—with reported leads in other decisive states, according to Edison Research. Other news outlets have yet to make official calls, but early results indicate significant Republican momentum.

Republican Strength Across the Map

Trump displayed a robust performance nationwide, improving on his 2020 results across rural and urban regions alike. Republicans also flipped Senate seats in West Virginia and Ohio, securing a Senate majority. However, control of the House of Representatives remains too close to call, despite Republicans’ current majority.

A Broader Appeal

Exit polls from Edison Research highlighted Trump’s increasing support among Hispanic and lower-income voters. Trump reportedly captured 45% of the Hispanic vote—a substantial 13-point gain since 2020. Economic concerns drove much of this support, as 31% of voters cited the economy as their top issue, favoring Trump by a decisive 79%-to-20% margin. Of the 45% of voters who said their family’s financial situation had worsened since 2020, an overwhelming 80% backed Trump.

Financial Markets React

Global markets reacted swiftly to Trump’s anticipated victory, with U.S. stock futures, the dollar, and Treasury yields all rising. Bitcoin also surged, as investors positioned for a Trump win and potentially business-friendly policies. Analysts noted that these market moves align with investor expectations of a Trump administration’s economic approach, prioritizing reduced regulatory pressures and trade policy changes.

Kamala Harris’s campaign has yet to concede, and Harris did not address her supporters on election night, though her campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, signaled that she would likely make a public statement on Wednesday. The final results may still depend on pending counts in other battleground states, but early indications point to a Republican resurgence under Trump’s leadership.
