Fringe cryptocurrency Dogecoin surged on Thursday, following a number of Tweets from famous billionaire and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX Elon Musk.

Musk is famous for his social media presence, which often causes some sort of controversy.

Mark Cuban, another famous billionaire investor has also recently tweeted about the digital currency, which started in 2013.

Dogecoin surged 44%. He then proceeded to tweet several more times about Dogecoin, at one point labeling it “the people’s crypto.”

Dogecoin (DOGE) is trading higher by about 40% a little above $0.50, after rising earlier by more than 44%.

It is worth noting that last month, the Dogecoin reached its all time high at 0.082.

Over the past seven days, Dogecoin has surged by about 115%, extending its gains since the beginning of the year close to 660%.

The digital currency reported began in 2013 as a joke between two engineers, which is why it resembles the name and face of a famous online meme.
