Ukraine’s ambassador to Ankara said on Thursday that his country had asked Turkey to close the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits to Russian ships, and also wanted to impose sanctions on Moscow after Russia launched air and ground attacks on its neighbor.
Turkey, a NATO member, has a maritime border on the Black Sea with Ukraine and Russia. Although she opposes the issue of sanctions, she describes the Russian steps against Ukraine as unacceptable.
Under a 1936 agreement, Ankara controls the straits and can restrict the movement of warships if they are endangered or during war.
