Canada’s Unemployment Rate Rises in April

Canada’s economy lost 207,000 jobs last month due to the resurgence of the Coronavirus pandemic, which led to renewed restrictions and lockdown measures, official data showed on Friday.

Accordingly, the Canadian unemployment rate increased in April to 8.1% from 7.5% in March, according to Statistics Canada.

Data showed that the number of employed people working less than half of their usual hours rose by 288,000, or 27.2%.

Last month’s job losses almost erased the 303,000 new jobs created in March.

Furthermore, 129,000 full-time jobs were lost, compared with 78,000 part-time vacancies.

The total number of working hours decreased by 2.7%.
