{"id":38587,"date":"2020-12-14T20:39:34","date_gmt":"2020-12-14T16:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/noortrends.ae\/en\/?p=38587"},"modified":"2020-12-14T20:39:36","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T16:39:36","slug":"narrow-path-now-seen-for-brexit-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noortrends.ae\/en\/narrow-path-now-seen-for-brexit-deal\/12\/14\/economic-reports\/","title":{"rendered":"Narrow Path Now Seen for Brexit Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With the end of the Brexit transition period approaching, there seem to be hopes for reaching a trade arrangement between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU\u2019s chief negotiator Michel Barnier said on Monday that a deal is still possible, noting that the upcoming days are critical, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reuters quoted another EU diplomat as saying that \u201cthere might now be a narrow path to an agreement visible &#8211; if negotiators can clear the remaining hurdles in the next few days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disagreements are mainly within three issues, namely: fisheries, competition rules, and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two sides are reportedly near an agreement on fishing rights, and the other two issues, especially as time is running short to reach a deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK and the EU have reportedly exchanged warnings that time is passing by without reaching a deal for the post-Brexit era, as the transitional period expires by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous negotiations that took place in London were reportedly quite difficult with massive disagreements remaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK is ready to reach a trade agreement with the EU but not at any cost, the British finance minister said at the beginning of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a frame for an agreement is reportedly in place, according to Rishi Sunak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunak, who recently played down the effect of a no trade deal Brexit in an interview with the Financial Times, told reporters \u201cwith a constructive attitude and goodwill on all sides we can get there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU is ready for the possibility of a no deal Brexit despite genuine progress in negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Prime Minister of Ireland, Micheal Martin, said last week that he is hoping the outline of a Brexit free-trade deal will come up by the end of the week, despite the continuous difference in opinions between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU), Reuters reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the time has come to be ready for a not reaching a trade deal with the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Johnson, the European Union refused to negotiate seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, the Chairman of the EU summit, Charles Michel said that he is still working for a deal with London, but will not compromise on the main issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that there is still time to reach a deal between the two sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month, Sunak said that significant progress has been achieved in trade talks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the end of the Brexit transition period approaching, there seem to be hopes for reaching a trade arrangement between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK).
