Last week\u2019s figure marked a <strong>seven-month low<\/strong>, suggesting that while layoffs remain subdued, demand for labor is not particularly strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in the week, the <strong>ADP employment report<\/strong> showed that <strong>U.S. private payrolls shrank by 32,000 in November<\/strong>, a surprise decline after a revised gain in October and well below forecasts for an increase \u2014 further evidence of cooling in the labor market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although a record-long federal government shutdown has delayed more comprehensive official employment data, the Fed argued at its <strong>September and October meetings<\/strong> that there was already enough evidence of a slowdown in hiring to justify easier monetary policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fed leadership speculation adds to dovish tone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dovish sentiment has also been reinforced by growing speculation over the Fed\u2019s future leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports that the <strong>Trump administration<\/strong> abruptly cancelled interviews with several other candidates for Fed chair have strengthened the view that <strong>Kevin Hassett<\/strong> \u2014 seen as more dovish than current Chair <strong>Jerome Powell<\/strong> \u2014 could take over when Powell\u2019s term ends in 2026.
